Flaming Skirt Festival2 is on a creative crusade

Amber Valley artist Sally Lemsford is creating a contemporary art festival in village halls, looking for ways to improve people’s perception of where she lives. She wants people to say ‘that’s a great place to live, there’s all sorts of things happening there.’

In 2012 she created the first Flaming Skirt Festival as an alternative to the Olympic Torch Relay because it didn’t visit the borough. It was so successful that Derbyshire County Council and Arts Council England are now funding Sally to do it again. On Sunday 27 April 2014 the Festival will be a taster of what local people say they would like to happen regularly in their community spaces.

From 10.15am till 5.30pm, a double-decker bus will travel between Ironville Church Hall, Riddings Park Community Centre, Denby Institute and Waingroves Community Centre, with a Flight Pack and Poetry Laundering on the Move on board. At each stopping point, there will be a different intriguing or spectacular activity led by commissioned artists from Yorkshire, East Midlands and London – games, ventriloquism, puppets, sculpture, prop-making and performance.

Sally says ‘People are really excited by the sound of this event. Art doesn’t have to be serious, in a gallery or in big cities; it can be on the move and shared by extended families in their own villages. This Festival is contributing to the great national debate about the value of culture.’

There is no need to book a place on this event, people can turn up on the day starting at Ironville Church Hall at 10.15am on 27th April. It’s completely free, just bring a packed lunch, so it’s a great day out for families and they can find out more information at flamingskirtfestival.tumblr.com
