War events continue as part of councils commemorations
Events are continuing as part of our two-year project to commemorate the First World War.
Tickets are now on sale for ’Standing in Line’ which tells the story of the Great War in images, songs and poetry performed by singers and musicians Lester Simpson, Mike Bettison and Nigel Corbett.
The event forms part of our ’Derbyshire Lives in the First World War’ project set up to capture stories from the time and offer residents support to stage their own events.
’Standing in Line’ centres on Lester’s great uncle Albert Scrimshaw who died in WWI. He brings a personal touch to the story through his own songs interwoven with songs from the time and the narration includes poems of Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Rudyard Kipling.
Our Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Ellie Wilcox said:
Events like this really bring to life stories of the First World War. "There’s a wealth of material out there and I’m delighted we are gathering stories from local communities and that the project is allowing us to support people organising their own commemorations."
We have received £84,600 Heritage Lottery Funding to set up ’Derbyshire Lives in the First World War’. It will pay for a project manager to work with local community groups, provide information and advice about staging events and help to find sources of financial support.
’Standing in Line’ was originally commissioned by ’Peace Concerts Passendale’ and premiered in Passendale Church in Belgium.
It will take place at Chesterfield Library, New Beetwell Street, on Thursday 1 May at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm). Brampton Brewery is providing a real ale bar and tickets are £8 with £5 concessions available from the library on 01629 533400.
