Three Derbyshire green spaces among the best in the country

Elvaston Castle Country Park, Shipley Country Park and Tapton Lock, all run by Derbyshire County Council, are among the country’s finest green spaces, after each receiving a prestigious Green Flag award.

The national award, handed out by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country and our parks and green spaces stood out after impressing the judges as welcoming spaces with well-managed grounds and excellent facilities.

A record-breaking 1,476 parks and green spaces received a prestigious Green Flag Award this year.

Councillor Andy Botham, our Deputy Cabinet Member for Economy, Jobs and Transport said:

"We are absolutely delighted that three of our sites have been recognised as some of the best green spaces in the country."

"They all offer lots to do and the award recognises and highlights the hard work our staff carry out."

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said:

"We are delighted to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces."

"A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who, through their dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy."

"Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before."

Elvaston Castle Country Park (opens in a new window) covers 200 acres of open parkland, woodland and formal gardens.

Tapton Lock, ChesterfieldCanal (opens in a new window) includes a towpath, picnic areas and a visitor centre.

Shipley Country Park (opens in a new window) covers 700 acres of varied landscape, much reclaimed from the coal mining industry.
