Council agrees the way forward for development

At its meeting on 15 October, Amber Valley Borough Council agreed which additional sites should be taken forward to enable it to provide for future housing needs, as part of the Core Strategy for the Borough.

The additional sites, together with other sites already identified, now means that the Council has made provision for 9,651 homes to be built in Amber Valley up to 2028. Most of this housing will be to meet needs arising within the Borough, although the Council has recognised that the limited opportunities to accommodate additional development within Derby means that some sites have had to be identified within Amber Valley to help meet Derby’s future housing needs.

The Council has also now withdrawn its proposals for a new A610 link road and associated development proposals at Ripley and Codnor. This follows work undertaken to establish whether or not the need for the link road could be demonstrated and therefore whether the Council could justify taking land out of the Green Belt for development.

The Council will be consulting shortly on the detailed policies for the additional housing sites. Following this consultation, the Council will then submit its further proposals to the Inspector appointed to examine the Core Strategy, in advance of the examination being resumed in February 2015.

Commenting on the latest moves in the Core Strategy, Deputy Leader of the Council, Cllr Chris Emmas-Williams, said: “It is extremely difficult to put together a plan which satisfies the Government inspector, meets the future housing needs of the Borough and pleases existing residents. However, I believe we have now got the makings of a robust plan for the future. I am aware that dropping plans for the A610 link road will not please everyone but in doing this we have followed through on our commitment not to develop on Green Belt land, which we feel is very important.”
