Derbyshire schools support anti-bullying week

Schools and children’s homes across Derbyshire are taking part in a week of activities to beat bullying.

We’re supporting National Anti-Bullying Week which runs from 17 to 21 November. This year’s message is stopping bullying for all, with a special focus on disabled children and those with special educational needs who are significantly more likely to experience bullying.

Schools and children’s homes are celebrating their own ’friendship’ week or ’respect’ week in a bid to focus on the positive.

Pupils will be taking part in workshops and theatre groups will visit schools to perform plays which highlight the devastating effects of bullying.

Parents and carers are urged to look for signs of bullying in children and young people. These could include:

-Unwillingness to go to school
-Feeling unwell, often with a headache
-Anxiety and irritability
-Aggression towards you or others in your family
-Bedwetting and waking in the night
-Missing or damaged belongings
-Unexplainable injuries
-Not doing as well at school
-Change in eating habits

If parents or carers think their child is being bullied, they should report it to the school. More information and advice can be found at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/bullying

Children who are being bullied should talk to a teacher or staff member at the school. They can also find support at www.childline.org.uk
