Ripley officers issue advice for staying safe this Christmas and New Year

Officers from the Ripley Safer Neighbourhood Team are asking residents, who plan on heading out to bars and pubs over Christmas and New Year, to stay safe and plan their trip home in advance.

Safer Neighbourhood officers from across Amber Valley will be carrying out increased foot patrols around Ripley Town Centre on New Year’s Eve and over the festive season to ensure that everyone has a trouble-free and enjoyable time.

PC Rich Marshall from the Ripley Safer Neighbourhood Team said “Drink driving can be fatal so we are asking people attending bars and clubs in the town centre to plan their trip home in advance.

“If you are going out for the evening, stick to soft drinks if you are driving, nominate a designated driver who can get you all home safely, or pre-book a taxi. Those who don’t pre book will be directed to the taxi rank’s in the town, particularly on New Year’s Eve.

“We want people to go out and have a safe and enjoyable time over Christmas and New Year. Make sure that you have your keys, money and phone and always let someone know what time you will be home and how you will be getting there.

“Anti-social behaviour, particularly related to alcohol, will not be tolerated and we will be taking action against those who commit it.”

Other crime prevention for staying safe over the festive period includes:

• When out shopping, carry your bag close to you with the clasp facing inwards, keep it zipped up, and make sure your wallet or purse can’t be seen;

• Ensure that any shopping bags are stored securely in the boot of the vehicle and not left on show to catch the eye of a passing criminal;

• Ensure that windows and doors are kept locked and that any valuables, including gifts, are kept out of sight;

• For added security, register your valuables for free on the secure website www.immobilise.com. This will help police to reunite you with your property should it be stolen and then recovered.
