Road safety is a new priority for officers in Kilburn
Officers in Kilburn are working alongside partner agencies and local schools to clamp down on nuisance parking and speeding in the village.
The Kilburn Safer Neighbourhood Team has set road safety as its new priority following a recent meeting with local people.
They will be carrying out increased patrols in affected areas, especially around schools, to advise motorists about the importance of safe and considerate driving.
PC Neil Hopwell and PCSO John Midgley will also be working alongside local schools and partner agencies to encourage motorists to park responsibly, and help to educate youngsters about road safety.
The pair have recently been involved in a number of road safety training days at Kilburn Infant and Nursery School and Denby Free School, to teach pupils about alternative ways of getting to and from school including walking, cycling and scooting, in a bid to alleviate traffic problems.
The schools were two of the first in Derbyshire to be awarded with the Bronze Modeshift Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition for Schools (STARS) Award, which recognises a commitment to promoting sustainable transport.
The team will also be working to put the brakes on speeding vehicles in the village by carrying out regular speed checks on surrounding roads. Motorists who are found to be driving over the set speed limit will be spoken to and warnings and fines will be issued where appropriate.
PC Hopwell said: “We are working to clamp down on this issue in the local area as we know it’s a worry for school staff, residents, parents and carers, especially around the safety of youngsters getting to and from school.
“We’re delighted to have the support of local schools and hope to help educate pupils about road safety and alternative, active ways of travel in a fun and enjoyable way, so youngsters remember the advice we give to them.
“Visits to local schools allow us to meet local children and build community links, so if they recognise us whilst we’re out and about on patrol, they’re able to stop and say hello.”
