Neverland fund-raiser for town centre defibrillator
ONE of Derby’s most popular bands is holding a gig to raise money for a defibrillator in Belper – after already collecting £2,250 for cancer charities this year.
Celtic rock band Neverland, which formed in 1992, has been holding charity gigs throughout the year, raising money for Cancer Research UK and the Breast Unit at the Royal Derby Hospital.
“We wanted to do it because, as we’ve aged, we’ve all encountered tragedies in our lives,” said mandolin player Mick Doyle.
“I lost my sister and my dad to cancer. Andy Cooper, (Neverland bass player) also lost his wife to cancer. It’s quite a sad time of your life, being of an older age. You look at things in a different light.”
The four concerts at the George and Dragon pub, in Belper’s Bridge Street, raised £1,800 for the Breast Unit and £450 for Cancer Research UK.
Now members of the four-piece band are to stage their final charity gig for 2015 and want to raise £2,000 to buy a defibrillator for Belper town centre.
The gig will take place at the George and Dragon from 9.45pm to 11.30pm on Friday, November 27. Admission is free, but people are urged to give generously.
Mr Doyle, of Bridge Street, works as a first-aid trainer in his day job and said it was a crying shame that a town which won last year’s High Street of the Year award had no defibrillator in the main shopping area.
“Ashbourne has got six,” he added. “I believe they’ve been used three times this year with some success, saving lives.
“I’m 60 now and was thinking, ‘What if I have a cardiac arrest on King Street? Where’s the defibrillator?’ There isn’t one.
“The fans who’ve come to see us have given their all and dug deep, and we want to thank them for that.
“This defibrillator will be funded by the people of Belper and fans of Neverland. We’re appealing for all the shopkeepers in King Street to donate something.”
Mr Doyle and the rest of the band have already raised more than £850 for the Belper defibrillator appeal through donations. One Riddings company, Kaydian Design, has already donated £100.
“I’ve also got to thank the people from the Yew Tree pub, in Ednaston,” he added. “The landlord, Chris Peach, kindly donated over £400 from his quiz nights.”
It is hoped that, with money from the gig, more donations from Belper businesses and, hopefully, help from the British Heart Foundation, the target can soon be hit.
Mr Doyle, from Firstline Safety Training, also plans to hold a free defibrillator training session for up to 20 Belper shopkeepers in the new year. Anyone interested should email him at mick@firstlinesafetytraining.co.uk.
