Film produced about delivering dementia-friendly care
The Derbyshire County Council has produced the film which details its ambitious scheme to deliver dementia-friendly care and state-of-the-art accommodation to hundreds of older people.
It is the county council’s biggest ever investment in specialist housing, day care and residential services for older people and will take shape over the next five to seven years.
The plans would see many of the county’s traditional residential homes being replaced with modern one and two-bedroomed apartments available at affordable rents, to buy or as shared ownership.
The plans are explained in the eight minute film, available as a DVD, which features interviews with individuals and couples already living in extra care apartments, talking about the benefits of living independently with their own front door, but having 24/7 care on site if they need it.
Some residents talk about how they knew they couldn’t manage in their homes any more but didn’t want to move in to traditional residential care, and how extra care was the ideal solution as they could keep their independence but had support on hand if they needed it.
Others talk about enjoying having the privacy of their own apartments but being able to join in with other residents in organised activities or meet up with people in the communal areas.
The film also features relatives of people living in extra care talking about the peace of mind they get from knowing their loved ones are safe and have care on hand, but are still making their own choices about their day-to-day lives.
People can watch the film on the county council’s website at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/transformingcare
