Let a credit union help you manage the cost of Christmas

If you’re worried about the cost of Christmas a credit union could offer a helping hand instead of you having to turn to high risk borrowing.

We’re encouraging residents to use credit unions (opens in a new window) as an alternative source of safe, affordable loans during the festive season and to help them cope with bills in the New Year.

We’re also continuing our work to support the local network. Earlier this year we approved £360,000 to help credit unions provide loans to more residents on low incomes and opened up collection points at some of our libraries making it easier for people to visit.

We now have collection points for Bolsover-based 2 Shires Credit Union at our libraries in Clowne, Creswell and Shirebrook making it easier for people to visit.

And we’ve just opened another on behalf of Money Spider Credit Union at Swadlincote Library to serve residents in the South Derbyshire area.

Our Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Dave Allen said:

"This time of year is expensive for everyone when any offer of a quick fix can be tempting if money’s short as no one wants their loved ones to go without.

"But quick fixes like pay day loans or loan sharks can come at an extremely high cost and vulnerable people who can afford it the least are affected the most.

"Credit unions can help people avoid the need to risk taking out short-term high-cost credit which is why we’re supporting them and setting up more collection points.

"I’d urge people with money worries to consider contacting a credit union to help them manage their money over the festive period, get some sound advice and avoid more serious financial problems in the New Year.

"We’re also encouraging people to sign up and invest in credit unions which are a sound financial choice while also helping to support others − what a great gift to give."

2 Shires Credit Union is supported by the following county council library collection point times:

Clowne Library, Recreation Close: Tuesdays - 1pm to 2pm
Creswell Library, Elmton Road: Saturdays - 9.30am to 11am
Shirebrook Library, Patchwork Row: Wednesdays - 9.30am to 11am
Money Spider Credit Union is supported with a collection point at our Swadlincote Library in Civic Way every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm.

Collection points are locations where people can save a small amount each week and for those with credit union loans to make repayments.

We’re encouraging our employees, councillors and pension scheme members to sign up and support credit unions with a new payroll system which allows them to have any amount from £1 upwards deducted straight from their monthly pay and paid into a Derbyshire Credit Union.

We’ve also outlined a commitment in our annual health report to help treble the number of people signed up to credit unions from 6,000 − representing less than 1 percent of Derbyshire’s population − to 18,000 by 2017.

And we’ve blocked access to payday loan company websites from our computers. The move affects all 7,000 computers we own across the county including those in libraries and those used by our employees.

People struggling with low incomes and debt can get help and support in the money and debts (opens in a new window) and welfare benefits (opens in a new window) sections of our website and also on the Advice Derbyshire website (opens in a new window)
