Police and partners team up to boost lighting in Kilburn

Police have teamed up with Derbyshire County Council to boost lighting and enable community and youth events to continue safely over the winter months.

PC Neil Hopwell and PCSO John Midgley from the Kilburn Safer Neighbourhood Team put forward the idea of additional lighting to the council following incidents of anti-social behaviour in the area.

Following this, Derbyshire County Council has since purchased a number of portable lights for use across the community.

PC Neil Hopwell from the Kilburn Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “I would like to thank our partners at Derbyshire County Council for funding the lighting which will help activities for local kids to continue over the winter months.

“With diversionary activities in place, this can provide a safe place for youngsters to meet up with their friends in a safe environment, along with reducing the number of calls for anti-social behaviour in the Kilburn Safer Neighbourhood area.

“So far, they have already been used with great success at the local Bluebox Youth Club in Belper, along with Sporting Futures. We look to also use these at local youth clubs, around multi-use game areas and other similar events in the near future.”

Derbyshire County Council Deputy Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Julie Hill said:

“We’re very pleased to support this worthwhile project which not only encourages young people to stay fit and active over the dark winter months but also helps residents in this community feel safer.”
