Nuisance 999 caller is jailed after breaching ASBO

A man who was given an ASBO barring him from calling 999 unless in an emergency has been jailed after breaching the order.

Under the terms of his order, Allen Parkin was told he must not contact any of the emergency services unless it was a genuine emergency.

Other conditions included a ban on acting anti-socially or causing unnecessary noise or disturbances at any address he was living at.

The 67-year-old breached the order in October and November 2014 after making a series of 999 calls to both Derbyshire police and East Midlands Ambulance Service.

He also breached the order by making excessive noise at his home address in Lime Close, Pinxton.

Parkin was arrested and charged with two counts of breaching an anti-social behaviour order.

He admitted both charges and was jailed for 12 months at Nottingham Crown Court on January 13 this year.

Superintendent Tracy Harrison, who is in charge of Derbyshire police’s call centres, said: “We have a limited number of 999 lines and it is very important that these are available for genuine emergency calls.

“This result shows how seriously we treat any abuse of the 999 system and we have had similar successes in court in recent years.

“We will continue to take action against those who use this lines to make malicious, abusive or nuisance calls. We will also continue working together with other emergency services to ensure all of the offences are fully investigated and brought before the court.

“The cost of putting another’s life at risk is simply not measurable.”
